What Bufin does
Bufin is a free budgeting web app that saves your financial data to your own Google Drive, your own OneDrive, or just the browser you're reading this in. Here's every part of it, in plain terms.
Spending and income
Log what you earn and what you spend across twenty-odd categories, with an optional note on whether a purchase felt worth it. Transactions can be typed, imported from a CSV your bank exports, read off a photographed receipt, or pulled from a screenshot of your bank's transaction list: the image is processed on your device, not uploaded.
Budgets
Set a monthly limit per category and watch the bars fill as the month goes. A budget-split view breaks a paycheque into the categories it has to cover, so the limits come from what you actually earn rather than from a number that sounded reasonable in January.
Recurring bills and the calendar
Rent, subscriptions, insurance, pay days, anything that repeats gets a schedule (daily through yearly, including every-two-weeks and twice-monthly) and appears on a calendar you can drag a bill across to reschedule it. Marking a bill paid writes the transaction for you.
Envelopes, paycheques and sinking funds
Sinking funds ('sinks') hold money aside for the things that arrive once a year and ruin a month. The paycheque planner works forward from your pay schedule, including variable pay, to show what each cheque has to cover before it lands.
Net worth, debt and investments
Track account balances and watch net worth over time, plan a debt payoff with the snowball or avalanche method, and keep portfolios with live-ish quotes, dividend frequency and fees. Investment figures are for tracking, not advice. Bufin is not a broker and holds nothing.
Households
A household is a shared budget: shared transactions, shared bills, a shared calendar and shared envelopes, with people you invite. This is the one part of Bufin whose data sits on Bufin's servers rather than in your own Drive, because the other members have to be able to read it. Your personal budget stays separate and stays yours.
Getting your data out
Export everything as JSON or as a formatted Excel workbook, at any time, from Settings. A JSON export can be restored back into any Bufin budget. There is no export fee, no waiting period and no support ticket.
